1. What we collect
When you access the Labs for the first time, we ask for two pieces of information:
- The name of the educational institution you are affiliated with (for example, "Virginia Research Institute" or "University of X")
- The type of institution (university, college, high school, or other)
2. How we use the information
We use the institution name and type you provide for a single purpose: to understand which schools, colleges, and universities are using our educational materials. This helps us plan future labs and report aggregate educational impact.
3. How we store it
For the current launch, we do not store this information at all. The registration gate asks for institution name and type to obtain your consent to the Terms of Use and to confirm you are accessing the Labs for an educational purpose. Your submission is not transmitted to any server or database — it is used only to unlock access on your device.
We may begin storing aggregate institution statistics in the future. If we do, we will update this notice with an appropriate effective date and describe the storage method.
Because we do not collect personal information, we cannot identify individual users. Requests for "access to your data" or "deletion of your data" do not apply — there is no personal data tied to you in our records.
4. Browser storage
After you register, your browser stores a small local flag (in localStorage) indicating that registration has been completed, so you don't see the registration prompt on every visit. This flag is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to us. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's local storage for this site.
5. Server logs and Cloudflare
Our site is hosted behind Cloudflare, a content delivery network. Cloudflare automatically processes basic web request metadata (IP address, browser type, country, page requested) as part of delivering our site and protecting against abuse. This metadata is retained by Cloudflare for approximately 24 hours and is then automatically deleted. We do not store this information separately and cannot associate it with any individual user.
For Cloudflare's own privacy practices, see: Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
6. Web fonts
Our pages load web fonts from fonts.googleapis.com (Google Fonts). Google may receive your IP address as part of serving these fonts. We do not share any other information with Google.
7. Who we share data with
No one. We do not collect, sell, rent, share, or transfer personal information to third parties.
8. Children
The Labs are designed for post-secondary students. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because we collect only an institution name and type (not a personal identifier), the Labs present minimal privacy risk to minors who may use them through their school.
Parents, guardians, and schools are responsible for deciding whether their minor students may use educational materials hosted on third-party sites. See our Terms of Use for more information about institutional and parental responsibility.
9. Your rights
Because we do not collect information that can identify you:
- We cannot provide you a copy of "your data" — we don't have any data tied to you personally
- We cannot delete "your data" — it doesn't exist in identifiable form
10. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
